Since its launch in 2003, CAGE has moved from strength to strength and is internationally recognised as a standard bearer in its area of work. Working to investigate, expose and counter human-rights abuses created under the guise of the ‘War on Terror’, the organisation, supported by a dedicated team of staff, interns and volunteers, has produced groundbreaking work. By promoting due process, primarily through raising awareness, the primary aim of CAGE is to see a return to the respect of those fundamental norms which transcend religion, societies and political theories. As an organisation, it is vital that we are constantly building relationships with individuals who have fallen foul of this new security paradigm and its fieldwork driven research, is at the heart of CAGE.
Interns will be given the opportunity to experience a wide range of roles, from research to marketing and communications, to help them gain experience and deepen their understanding on the human-rights abuses stemming from the War on Terror. Interns will be assigned a 6-month research project, in which there will be opportunities to conduct fieldwork and where necessary, work directly with individuals who have been detained, rendered or tortured. Interns are also expected to monitor developments as well as attend events with or on behalf of CAGE. Previous intern projects have dealt with issues surrounding Guantanamo Bay, secret detention and the often ill conceived counter-terror laws of the UK and EU, and these can be accessed via the ‘Reports’ section.
For the next round of internships set to commence, we are looking for:
- 2 x research assistant interns
The internship is full-time and therefore not suitable for those in full-time education (there are volunteering opportunities for those still in education). If you have just graduated with either an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification, this internship will be a fantastic opportunity to apply your knowledge and enhance your research skills in this growing organisation. Although internships are unpaid, we offer the successful candidate full travel and lunch expenses as well as an excellent reference on completion of the six month period.
Applicants should be motivated, organized and reliable, with a strong commitment to providing due process to all. A rudimentary understanding of the concepts surrounding international law will be helpful as well as an understanding and familiarity of Muslim culture.
