London - Last weekend, CAGE International attended the first Global Anti-Apartheid Conference for Palestine held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Organised by the South African Anti-Apartheid Steering Committee (SAAASC) and held from May 10th-12th.

The conference brought together international figureheads, human rights activists and politicians, such as Palestinian political leader Mustapha Barghouti, former Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu and Naledi Pandor, the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation who requested the ICC to investigate crimes of genocide committed by Israel in its 7 month onslaught against the Palestinian people.

Attendees discussed in detail plans to develop political, legal, public diplomacy and media strategies to further isolate Israel and hold it accountable for its crimes of genocide committed in Gaza. The conference aims to strengthen the global solidarity movement for Palestine and intensify action to dismantle Israel’s apartheid, settler-colonial and genocidal policies against Palestinians. International support for the Palestinian struggle for self-determination was reiterated as well as the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

At the conclusion of the conference, the Johannesburg Declaration was published. It marks a significant step forward for global mass mobilisation to respond to Israel's genocide, apartheid and settler colonialism of the Palestinian people. CAGE International participated in the global conference given our immediate concerns to end the genocide ensuing in Gaza on a daily basis. It has become imperative for all of us to use multilateral approaches to achieve not only the immediate goal of ending loss of life and harm towards innocent civilians, but to stand united so we can end this 76 year oppression for a free Palestine.

An action plan for a road map to achieving these goals will be completed in the coming month. CAGE International thanks the people of South Africa for showing such strong and committed leadership, action and coordination of civil society to support the Palestinian struggle.
