Condolences on the Passing of Munir Farooqi

London - CAGE International sends its condolences to the family of Munir Ahmed Farooqi who died behind bars following 17 years of unjust imprisonment. 

A pillar and beloved figure in his community, Munir Farooqi operated a dawah (Islamic) stall in Manchester dedicated to sharing Islam with the public for a decade or so.

 The police, desperate to gain terrorist convictions to secure higher budgets, exploited Munir’s hospitality and targeted him as part of a heinous entrapment operation. Undercover officers disguised themselves as curious converts to Islam, abused the father of five’s trust, and elicited comments from him that they know full well would be misconstrued in the hyper alert post 7/7 environment. This disgraceful scheme coloured by an Islamophobic environment was exploited to secure his conviction. 

 The evidence revealed no plot, no attempt to groom any vulnerable individuals, no weapons, no targets. Just impromptu opinions about Islam, the brutality of colonial occupation and the legitimacy and right of resistance. 

 The British state showed no mercy or compassion and made his incarceration a living hell as a message to his family , supporters and those who spoke against injustice.

 CAGE International hails his determination, unwavering adherence to his faith, and continued resistance despite the injustices and brutality that he faced. Keep Munir and his family in your prayers and attend his funeral prayers when they are announced.
