Uncertain Future: The release of Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi from Guantanamo
CAGE welcomes the US releasing Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi from Guantanamo back to his native Tunisia, following 23 years of imprisonment without charge or trial. Ridah has been held at Guantanamo since it opened on 11 January 2002 and was cleared for release over a decade ago. His release however, opens new questions as to accountability and safety post Guantanamo.
Mansoor Adayfi Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner, survivor of CIA Black sites, and CAGE International Guantanamo Project coordinator said:
"Ridah Bin Saleh al Yazidi’s transfer to Tunisia raises serious concerns about his safety and future, as little is known about his life there or any guarantees for his well-being. The U.S. has not disclosed details about the security arrangements for his return, leaving his protection uncertain. This case underscores broader issues of accountability and responsibility, as detainees like Yazidi are released without clear assurances of safety, leaving their fates in jeopardy. They risk facing a grim future, potentially a “Guantanamo 2.0,” where abuse, torture, and imprisonment may await them once again."
