Khutbah: Prisoners of conscience

Assalamu'alaykum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh,
A group of regional and national organisations have come together and have launched a coordinated khutbah campaign highlighting the plight of political prisoners in the UK and around the world.
Our aim is simple:
Raise awareness in our communities and mobilise real action to support efforts for the release of those unjustly imprisoned.
The Prophet ﷺ reminded us:
أَطْعِمُوا الْجَائِعَ، وَعُودُوا الْمَرِيضَ، وَفُكُّوا الْعَانِي
“Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and free the captives.”
(Sahih Bukhari 5649)
Imam Mālik (rahimahullah) said:
“It is obligatory upon the people to ransom the prisoners with all that they possess… because the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Set the prisoners free.’”
Supporting the oppressed and standing with unjustly detained individuals is a core duty of our dīn, yet one that is often forgotten. A few advocacy groups are working tirelessly, but the need for wider awareness, unity, and meaningful action is urgent.
We will be publishing a template khutbah but feel free to create your own, dedicating a part or the whole khutbah to the cause. We will also be releasing profiles of some of the prisoners to help us connect and better emphasise with their pains.
May Allah grant relief and freedom to all those oppressed. May Allah envelope them in His divine mercy and grant them and their families steadfastness.
Jazākumullāhu khayran
