Infographic: 24 years of Guantanamo Bay in numbers

The 11th of January 2026 marks 24 years since the opening of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, experimental lab and torture centre.

Set up to detain, interrogate and torment Muslim men and boys - most of whom were simply rounded up for bounties or kidnapped - as part of the 'War on Terror', Guantanamo is a stain on humanity's conscience.

Established under the Bush administration, Guantanamo has held around 800 prisoners. Prisoners were from different parts of the world, with many facing rendition and torture at CIA blacksites before ending up at Guantanamo.

Only one percent of those who were jailed were ever convicted. Others simply languished in prison for years without charge or trial before being released. Others yet, died behind bars.

Many people do not know that there are still 15 men detained at Guantanamo. The world may have moved on, but 24 years later, these sons, brothers, husbands and fathers are still behind bars without access to basic justice.

Successive American administrations have kept this prison open and Trump is now turning Guantanamo into a migrant detention facility, continuing its long history of brutality.

CAGE International has for the last two decades campaigned to shut down Guantanamo, to release all prisoners, to ensure reparations for those jailed and tortured behind its notorious walls, and to hold those behind these crimes accountable.

Our demand is to #FreetheGitmo15!

This infographic present a snapshot of the violations of international law, the systemic persecution and the injustice that Guantanamo Bay continues to represent.
